Ridley Scott DVD Set

In this illustration project, the requirements called for a set of 3 illustrated dvd case covers from one film director, along with a way of packaging them together and disc labels. I chose to focus on the epic works of Ridley Scott. I painted each scene with acrylic paint, then added charcoal for a more shaded effect. After scanning these images, I enhanced the colors to fit each film, then added in the typogrpahy, using a drop cap on the back with Adobe Garamond. I also brought the paint effect to the back.

The dvd labels use the same type and illustration. As for the element to hold these together, I created a belly band that had the painted illusion, but hid the dvd cover paint so it would be a surprise to the buyer.

After choosing the director to focus on, I watched the films and research each ones history and statistics. What most caught my eye, however, was the credits to Robin Hood. The credits use this painted feeling to ther animations, the movement changing like brush strokes. It felt more primal and mroe appropriate for the time these films were set in, so I wanted to incorporate that in my covers. I began with the famous images we see in these films, and painted them in acrylic. The colors also follow the palettes you would see in the film. After the painting, I added in charcoal to give more detail to the characters and to add more primal feeling. It also helped with giving the characters more movement. Those images were then transferred to computer, where I played with the background color some more to unify the color palettes so that they were cohesive as a set.
